A non-governmental organisation, Lions Club International District 404-B3 Nigeria, has distributed 3,000 free medicated eye glasses to prevent avoidable blindness and improve quality of life for the visually impaired.

Its District Governor, Olayiwola Fadairo, said this at a news conference organised ahead of the district’s first convention for February in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The convention is titled EGBA 2024 with the theme: “Rebirth of service passion.”

According to him, the glasses were donated in 2023 under an initiative made possible through a partnership with a recycling eyeglasses company in the United States of America.

Mr Fadairo said that apart from the free eye glasses provided, the club also conducted eye screenings to individuals to ensure that glasses given to them were tailored to their needs.

He also explained that the comprehensive approach to eye care was benefited by many individuals in the communities under the district, which include those in Ibadan, Abeokuta, Ota, and Lagos.

“This glasses were given to us free of charge by a recycling eyeglasses company in the United States of America, with the help of one of our past district governors. We received the consignment of over 6,000 eye glasses; so far, so good. Over 3,000 medicated eye glasses have been distributed in various axes within our district, which are Ibadan, Abeokuta, Ota and Lagos,” he added.

In addition to the eye care initiatives, Mr Fadairo said that the district had been actively involved in supporting various community projects.

He disclosed that the club would be launching a cancer awareness campaign along with its empowerment programmes.

The club is dedicated to global causes such as reducing the prevalence of diabetes and improving the quality of life for those diagnosed.

Others include preventing avoidable blindness, and ensuring access to nutritious food demonstrates their commitment to making a meaningful and wide-reaching impact.
