Locals protesting murder of Bauchi farmer by suspected herders kill 20 cows

Irate locals killed 20 cows and injured scores of sheep in protest over the killing of a farmer by suspected herders in Kaduna community of Bogoro Local Government Area, Bauchi State on Friday.
The Bauchi Police Command spokesperson, Ahmed Wakil, in a statement confirmed the incident, explaining the efforts of the police to restore peace in the area.
The police said, “Today, 8th August, 2025, the command received a report from one Emmanuel Bulus, the village head of Kaduna via Bogoro LGA, Bauchi State, that one Irmiya Yohanna m’, aged 40 years of Kaduna-Bogoro, went to farm situated at the outskirts of the village on Thursday and couldn’t return home.
“A search was conducted within and around the farm, and his lifeless body was found lying on the farm premises.”
The police said preliminary investigations showed that the murdered farmer “sought the herders to chase their cows out of his farm, which resulted in a physical confrontation that led to the tragic death.”
According to the police, locals angered by the death of Mr Yohanna killed 20 cows. However, the police were able to rescue many other cows and arrested one person suspected to have killed Mr Yohanna.
The police noted, “Subsequently, some irate locals invaded some cattle around the village, stabbed and killed approximately 20 cows, 19 sheep, and several were injured. About 249 cows were rescued by the police, and one Ahmadu Mairiga was arrested. He was suspected to be responsible for the tragic death of Irmiya Yohanna.”
The police called to calm, urging locals not to take the laws into their own hands.
