Lumen Field is a multi-purpose stadium in Seattle, Washington,, and is home to the reigning National Football League champions, the Seattle Seahawks, Major League Soccer side Seattle Sounders, and National Women’s Soccer League team Seattle Reign FC.

It is one of 11 venues across the United States selected to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, with Lumen Field billed to stage six games, including a clash between hosts the United States and Australia.

Belgium vs Egypt, Egypt vs Iran, Bosnia and Herzegovina vs Qatar and two knockout phase matches are set to be played at the Lumen Field.

Known for its acoustic design, the 68,000-capacity stadium features 30 uninterrupted rows of bleachers and a partial roof with overhanging steel canopies to trap and enhance crowd noise, making the venue one of the loudest in the NFL.

It once set the Guinness World Record for the loudest roar at an outdoor sports stadium during an NFL game between the Seattle Seahawks and the New Orleans Saints in December, 2023, with the noise level reaching 137.6 decibels.

However, fans at Arrowhead Stadium, which is also one of the World Cup venues, broke the record the following year during a game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the New England Patriots, setting a new record of 142.2 decibels.

Construction of the stadium began in September 1998 and was completed in July 2002, costing $430 million at the time and $770 million at today’s rates.

The arena features over 100 executive suites, an artificial playing surface, and a 13-story tower with the NFL’s first vertical scoreboard. In accordance with FIFA regulations on marketing and sponsorship, Lumen Field will be renamed as the Seattle Stadium during the World Cup.

When it opened in 2002, the arena debuted as Seahawks Stadium before becoming known as Qwest Field in 2004, after Qwest Communications acquired the naming rights.

Following CenturyLink’s acquisition of Qwest in 2011, the stadium was renamed CenturyLink Field, and the company paid $162.7 million in 2017 to extend the naming deal through 2033.

In 2022, the arena was renamed Lumen Field after CenturyLink rebranded as Lumen Technologies.

Beyond the upcoming World Cup, the stadium has hosted other major sports events, including the CONCACAF Gold Cup, CONCACAF Champions League, MLS Cup final and the Copa América Centenario.
