Manchester United edged Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield in an intense encounter sealed by Harry Maguire’s trademark header.

Sunday’s Premier League clash saw Ruben Amorim’s side travel to Anfield to face Arne Slot’s Liverpool, with both teams desperate for points in their respective campaigns.

United opened the scoring just two minutes into the match through Bryan Mbeumo, who capitalised on a sloppy defensive moment from the hosts to slot home the opener.

Liverpool responded with several attempts, including efforts that struck the woodwork from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, and Hugo Ekitike, but young United goalkeeper Senne Lammens stood firm to deny them.

After an intense first half, Slot’s men finally levelled through Gakpo, who converted from close range after Federico Chiesa’s clever ball across the six-yard box.

Just when it seemed both sides would settle for a draw, United captain Bruno Fernandes delivered a pinpoint cross that met Maguire’s head, as the defender powered home the decisive goal to stun Anfield.

Despite late pressure from Liverpool, United held firm to secure a vital victory, their first win at Anfield since January 17, 2016, when they triumphed 1-0.

The result gives Amorim’s men a much-needed boost in their campaign, while Liverpool are left to regroup after suffering their fourth consecutive league defeat.

Liverpool now shift focus to their Champions League trip to Germany to face Eintracht Frankfurt before an away fixture against Brentford, while United prepare to host Brighton at Old Trafford.
