Makinde appoints acting board members for Oyo electricity regulatory commission

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved appointmet of acting board members for the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (OYSERC).
This is contained in a statement issued by the special adviser to the governor on media, Suleimon Olanrewaju, made available to journalists on Friday in Ibadan.
According to the statement, the board, which will facilitate the oversight functions of the commission, is chaired by the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Dahud Sangodoyin.
The governor also appointed Taiwo Ayanniyi as secretary; while Solomon Oyekunle and Abiodun Adedoja would serve as technical and strategic member respectively.
The statement further indicated that Omolara Omoremi would serve as legal adviser to the board.
The statement quoted Mr Makinde as saying the appointments are in acting capacity and it was in a bid to accelerate the opening of the state’s electricity market.
It also aims at driving the institutional take-off of the commission and establishing foundational regulatory systems and licensing frameworks.
The statement said that the commission was also to ensure compliance mechanisms, tariff oversight methodologies, consumer protection architecture, and internal governance structures.
“The appointments are equally significant in the operationalisation of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, thus marks a major step in the implementation of the Electricity Act 2023 and the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission Law 2024.
“The state Electricity Law, 2024, empowers the state to regulate its intra-state electricity market under Nigeria’s evolving dual-tier regulatory framework.
“With the decentralisation of electricity regulatory oversight, Oyo State is now positioned to respond more quickly to electricity service gaps, strengthen accountability of operators, and encourage private sector investment in local power solutions,” Mr Makinde said.
