Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has sacked some ministers and over 270 political aides.

“As part of the Economic Reform Agenda, as a direct cost cut down measure, I have today instructed to remove 228 political appointees from various government ministries,” Mr Muizzu announced in a tweet on Tuesday.

The cuts, which he said would be implemented within the “next 15 days,” would affect a range of positions, including seven state ministers, 43 deputy ministers, 109 senior political directors, and 69 political directors.

“This includes seven state ministers, 43 deputy ministers, 109 senior political directors and 69 political directors,” Mr Muizzu said, adding that “It will save Rf 5.714m (£295,000) per month from the government budget.”

This decision is seen as a direct response to calls for fiscal responsibility and more efficient governance amid economic challenges facing the archipelago nation famous for its luxury resorts and tourism centre.

The development came a year after the 46-year-old assumed office.
