The police on Thursday charged  a 27-year-old man Hammed Lateef, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, over alleged assault and causing a breach of peace.

The defendant whose address was not stated is standing trial on charges bordering on assault and breach of peace

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Inspector Friday Maneh, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 27, at about 3:00 p.m. at Seriki Palace, Faiba market, in Badagry, Lagos.

He alleged that following a misunderstanding, the defendant assaulted the complainant, Adamu Yusuf, by using a  stone to hit his head.

The prosecutor alleged that this caused injuries on the head of the complainant, who reported same to the police.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant also conducted himself in a manner likely to breach public peace by his action.

He said that Lateef was consequently arrested by the police.

The offences contravene the provisions of Sections 168 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, A J Aina, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He held  that one of the sureties must be a community leader.

The court adjourned the case until April 28, for mention.
