Man, 32, jailed for peddling 1.4kg of cannabis sativa
The Federal High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday, sentenced one Sikiru Ogunrinde, 32, to two years in the correctional centre for peddling 1.4kg of Cannabis Sativa.
Delivering judgment, Justice Nkeonye Maha said that Ogunrinde was convicted and sentenced following his guilty plea and the evidence tendered against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Oyo State Command.
Ms Maha said that the convict was handed a light sentence being a first time offender and because he did not waste the time of the court.
She further said that Ogunrinde showed remorse and had promised to be of good behaviour henceforth.
“To serve as a deterrent to others, Ogunrinde is sentenced to two years in prison. Sentencing starts from the date he was first arrested. The NDLEA shall destroy the weeds found in possession of the convict,” Ms Maha said.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, A.A. Balogun, had told the court that the convict committed the crime on August 11, 2025, at Oloju- Academy, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Ms Balogun said that NDLEA operatives received a tip-off from concerned Nigerians that Ogunrinde was dealing in the illicit drugs prompting the command to order investigation into his activities.
She added that Ogunrinde was apprehended in possession of a bag containing 1.4kg of Cannabis Sativa.
The counsel said that the offence contravened the provisions of section 11(C ) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
