A yet-to-be-identified man in Niger State on Friday disarmed one of the robbers who trailed him from a bank where he had withdrawn several millions of naira, to a complex in Minna, the state capital.

The robbers who were caught unawares by the victim’s audacity eventually made away with the money said to be around N10 million and the victim’s car.

‎The incident captured in a now viral video showed how two robbers alighted from a silver coloured Toyota Corolla and headed towards the victim in his vehicle, a blue Toyota Camry.

They forced him out of the car and removed a bag containing the money into the vehicle they brought and were about to drive away when the vehicle owner resisted their getaway plan. He eventually disarmed and injured one of them and started shooting to frustrate their escape.

‎The robbers fired bullet unsuccessfully at the victim who later fled when the shooting became nonstop.

‎In the gun duel that lasted for some seconds, the robbers were seen in the video moving their loot from the car they brought to the scene into the victim’s car and later drove away.

Several commenters on the video said that the robbery would have been foiled if police arrived at the scene in time to frustrate the robbers’ escape. The victim’s confrontation appeared to have destabilised their probable plan to flee the scene immediately they hijack the bag of money.

‎In an interview watched by the Peoples Gazette, the shirtless victim said two armed persons started shooting at him as they accosted him at the complex.

‎He stated, “Two of them (robbers) just came out of a car. I didn’t even know who they were. I initially thought they were policemen and I was even asking what my offence was but they started shooting at me. Unfortunately for them, I snatched a gun from one of them and I didn’t know how God did it, I was shooting back at them.”

‎Contacted for comments on the issue, the Niger State police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said that the victim was accosted and robbed at about 3pm on Friday after being trailed to a complex on Shiroro road.

‎Mr Abiodun said, “On 6th March, 2026 at about 3pm, suspected armed robbers attacked a Toyota Corolla vehicle reportedly trailed from a bank to Shiroro road, and the victim was robbed of a sum amount of money and his vehicle, while the robbers abandoned their vehicle and escaped with the victim’s vehicle.”

‎He noted that the victim snatched a rifle from the robbers and later handed it over to the police.

‎Mr Abiodun said, “Further findings indicated that the victim recovered one of the robbers’ rifles. Police operatives attached to Tudun- Wada Division moved to the scene, recovered the rifle and the robbers’ vehicle and the case was transferred to SCID Minna.”

‎He noted that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the robbers, adding that the victim’s car was recovered on Saturday at a location where it was abandoned.
