A 26-year-old man, Olaitan Akanmu, on Tuesday appeared before a Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stabbing a police officer on duty.

Mr Akanmu of no fixed residential address, pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge bordering on assault.

The prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that Mr Akanmu and others still at large, committed the offences on January 31, at Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Mr Nurudeen said that Mr Akanmu and his accomplices attacked a police officer, Friday Ogar, and his team while on official duty.

He explained that Mr Akanmu viciously stabbed Mr Ogar with a broken bottle.

Mr Nurudeen said that the offences contravened sections 173, 174 (b) and 413 (4) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Peter Nwaka, granted the defendant N500,000 bail, with four sureties in like sum.

He directed that one of the sureties must be a blood relation, gainfully employed and show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State government.

Mr Nwaka also said that the sureties must have their addresses verified by the court, and adjourned the case until April 3 for mention.
