Man drags ex-wife to court over refusal to leave house after divorce
A businessman, Dauda Dahiru, on Thursday, dragged his ex-wife, Rabi’atu Suleiman, to the Shari’a Court sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, for refusing to leave his house two years after their divorce.
The complainant’s counsel, Hassan Sadisu, told the court that Ms Suleiman has five girls and a boy.
He also said that the defendant was pregnant with their last child when they divorced but was allowed to stay in the house until she gave birth.
Mr Sadisu further said that Ms Suleiman stayed in the house until she gave birth, and two years after, she was insisting that the house should be left for her.
The complainant prayed the court to order her to vacate the house because he had sold the property but was ready to rent her a house for the sake of the children.
However, the defendant insisted that Mr Dahiru should buy a one-bedroom flat for her or rent a house with five years of the rent paid.
The judge, Mu’awiyah Shehu, explained to the defendant that she has no valid reason to make the complainant do the things she requested.
He added that the complainant was only responsible for the children’s upkeep and wellbeing and not for her and cannot be forced to pay five years’ rent.
The judge then adjourned the case until September 8 and ordered the defendant to find a house and present it to the court so the complainant could pay the rent as agreed.
He ordered Ms Suleiman to vacate the house immediately, warning that there would be consequences if she failed to comply.
