A 40-year-old man, Gabriel Simon, was arraigned on Thursday in a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding his friend of N1.5m.

The defendant, who resides at Gbagyi Villa Kaduna, was arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating which he denied committing.

The prosecution, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that the complainant, Leonard Julius, residing at Ungwan Pam’s Kaduna, reported the matter at Ungwan Pama Police Station on November 26.

Mr Leo alleged that sometime in July, the defendant demanded N1.5m from the complainant on the pretext that he would secure a job for the complainant’s two siblings.

He said that the complainant gave the defendant the money but he neither secured the job nor refunded the money to the complainant.

“On September 17, the defendant was arrested and he wrote an undertaking to refund the money before the end of October but he failed to do so,” the prosecutor said.

Mr Leo said that the offences contravened the provisions of sections 327 and 241 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200, 000 with sureties in like sum and the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.

Mr Emmanuel said the sureties must provide Certificate of Occupancy, National Identity card or driving licence.

He said that if the defendant failed to meet the bail condition, he should be remanded in prison custody.

Emmanuel adjourned the case until December 20, for hearing.
