Man in court for allegedly stabbing peacemaker with bottle

A 30-year-old businessman, Francis Elijah, was on Thursday brought before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stabbing a man with a broken bottle.
Mr Elijah, who resides at the Ungwan Pama area of Kaduna State, is facing a charge of assault.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on December 26 along Ahmadu Bello Way Kaduna.
He said that the defendant unlawfully assaulted one Blessed David by stabbing him with a broken bottle in his head and face.
Mr Leo said the defendant was beating a tricycle rider and the complainant tried to stop him.
“The complainant got to the scene to make peace between the two parties, when the defendant transferred his aggression on the complainant for daring to stop him from beating up the tricyclist,’’ he said.
The prosecutor said the defendant also pushed the complainant into the gutter which caused him to dislocate his ankle.
The offence contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
In his ruling, the Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He said the sureties should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.
Mr Emmanuel adjourned the case until 27 for hearing.
