Man jailed three years for assault, pouring hot oil on wife

An Abeokuta Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced a 30-year-old man, Kazeem Solola, to three years imprisonment for assaulting and maiming his wife by pouring hot oil and stabbing her.
Solola, who pleaded not guilty to charge initially, was convicted on a two-count charge of assault and causing grievous bodily harm.
The Chief Magistrate, A. K. Araba, held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and found the defendant guilty as charged.
In her judgment, Ms Araba sentenced Solola to two years imprisonment on count one and three years imprisonment on count two, with no option of fine.
She ordered that the sentences run concurrently and take effect from the date the defendant was first arraigned in the court.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Inspector Lawrence Olu-Balogun, told the court that the offence was committed on January 18, 2025, at about 9:00 p.m., at Ring Owode Egba, in Abeokuta.
Mr Olu-Balogun said that the now convict unlawfully assaulted his wife, Mutiat Solola, by pouring hot palm oil on her neck and body and stabbing her on the neck and head, which caused her grievous bodily harm.
He added that the act resulted to permanent injury on the victim.
According to the prosecutor, the couple had a misunderstanding while the victim was cooking.
The prosecutor said that the offence, contravened Sections 355 and 335 of the Criminal Code, Vol. I, Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
