Manchester United sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton
Manchester United have confirmed the long-awaited signing of Cameroonian international Carlos Baleba from Brighton in a deal worth £70 million on a four-year contract with an option for an additional year until 2032.
The 22-year-old midfielder had been sought after by the Red Devils since the previous transfer window, but the deal was put on hold due to Brighton’s huge price tag of more than £100 million.
Baleba expressed his delight at joining United, describing the move as an incredible opportunity and adding that he could not wait to work under Michael Carrick.
“It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams. Playing at Old Trafford is always special, but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour.
“I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick; his experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me to reach the highest level,” Baleba said.
“The ambition of everyone at the club is extremely clear; the future is hugely exciting, and I am determined to play my part in delivering the success that we are capable of together,” he added.
The club’s director of football, Joe Wilcox, described Baleba as an elite midfielder whose qualities would strengthen United’s midfield.
Mr Wilcox said, “Carlos is an elite midfielder with immense potential to develop further. He brings a unique combination of qualities that will really complement our squad.
“We are delighted to further strengthen our midfield with the addition of another established senior international with a proven track record of performing in the Premier League.
“Carlos’ determination to join Manchester United and his confidence that we will achieve our shared ambitions mean that he is the perfect signing as we continue to build a dynamic and entertaining team ready to compete across multiple competitions.”
Baleba completes United’s miss on rebuilding their midfield, adding to the club’s previous arrivals of Youri Tielmans and Andrey Santos.
The Cameroonian international’s arrival is also expected to fill the huge gap left by the departure of United’s most experienced midfielder, Casemiro.
