The historic city of Bari played host to an evening of inspiration and cultural exchange as global leaders, innovators, and creative visionaries gathered for the Mandela Awards Gala Dinner and Ceremony at the elegant Scuderia Room, Villa Romanazzi.

The prestigious gala event was presented in partnership with the Thembekile Mandela Foundation, led by CEO Ndileka Mandela, as part of the Foundation’s ongoing mission to promote the values of integrity, leadership, and community empowerment championed by Nelson Mandela.

The Mandela Awards Commission, together with Apulian Runway Experience, Regione Puglia, and CNA Puglia, came together to honour individuals and organizations making a meaningful contribution to the creative economy and social impact sectors.

Among this year’s honourees was world-renowned photographer Richard Young, who received the Mandela Award for Contribution to Photography in recognition of his five-decade career capturing some of the most defining cultural and humanitarian moments of our time. 

From intimate portraits of global icons to images that have shaped modern history, Young’s work embodies the spirit of storytelling and empathy that aligns closely with Mandela’s own legacy of humanity and connection.

The ceremony’s visual and artistic direction was led by Bruno Simeone, creative director of the awards show and gala. Known for his refined aesthetic and visionary approach, Simeone curated an atmosphere that blended glamour and meaning, dressing numerous distinguished guests and international figures — including former Princess Tessy of Luxembourg — in his signature elegant style.

The evening formed part of the inaugural Creative Economy Forum, under the direction of CEO Daniele Del Genio and Co-Presidents Taiwo Meghoma and Joseph Hammond, which celebrates the role of creativity, innovation, and cultural collaboration in driving sustainable economic growth across regions.

Among the forum’s featured speakers was Adenike Adeyemi, a leading voice from Nigeria’s entrepreneurship and creative development community, who spoke passionately about the power of cross-border collaboration and youth empowerment within Africa’s creative industries.

Fashion took center stage during the gala, with a standout showcase by Kamilla Babaeva, the Azerbaijani designer whose ethereal and sculptural creations captivated the audience and reflected the event’s fusion of artistry, identity, and global unity.

Distinguished guests enjoyed an evening of regional fine dining, cultural showcases, music and heartfelt tributes underscoring the shared mission to foster collaboration between Africa and Europe’s creative economies.

The Mandela Awards in Bari mark another important step in expanding the Foundation’s global network of creative and socially conscious leaders—connecting heritage and innovation in pursuit of a more equitable world.
