Menstrual Hygiene Day: Edo NAWOJ donates pads to girls

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Edo chapter, on Friday, commemorated World Menstrual Hygiene Day by providing free sanitary pads and menstrual hygiene education to teenage girls.
The chairperson of the association, Habiba Sam, distributed the sanitary pads and held an interactive session on proper menstrual hygiene practices at Benin Technical College.
World Menstrual Hygiene Day is celebrated every year on May 28. This year, the day fell on a public holiday for Sallah celebrations.
The initiative aligns with NAWOJ’s core mission to support the girl child, amplify women’s voices, and protect vulnerable groups in society.
Addressing the students, Ms Sam said the visit aimed to equip the young girls with accurate knowledge and confidence to manage their periods without shame.
“Do not feel less of yourself when you are menstruating. It is a normal and healthy part of growing up.
“The key is to maintain cleanliness, bathe regularly, change your sanitary pad every four to six hours, and use clean underwear.
“These help to prevent infections and keep you comfortable,” she said.
Ms Sam also encouraged the girls to prioritise their wellness during their monthly cycle. She said menstruation should not be a barrier to learning or self-esteem.
She restated the commitment of NAWOJ Edo chapter to supporting girls and women, ensuring they have the resources and knowledge to live healthy, dignified lives.
The students welcomed the gesture with excitement. Speaking on their behalf, Favour Oghara thanked NAWOJ for the free pads and for teaching them proper hygiene practices.
She noted that the lecture helped clear myths and reinforced the importance of staying clean and confident during their period.
