Moroccan navy rescues 525 migrants in 11 days
The Moroccan navy rescued 552 migrants heading for Spain from April 8 to 18, official news agency MAP reported on Thursday.
The migrants, including women and minors, were mostly from Sub-Saharan Africa, the agency quoted a military statement as saying.
Coastguards units of the Moroccan Royal Navy operating in the Mediterranean and Atlantic have rescued the migrants during different operations, while they were traveling in inflatable boats, kayaks, jet-skis and even swimming, it added.
Some of the migrants were in poor health conditions and received first aid from the navy, before being brought back to different Moroccan ports, according to the report.
Morocco has become an important crossing point for Sub-Saharan African migrants seeking to reach Europe.
