Some Muslims in Kano have expressed concern over the ugly trend of some herbalists who advertise and sell their products while iman is delivering sermon at the Eid praying ground.

A cross section of the worshipers, who spoke on Wednesday at Kofar Mata Eid ground in Kano, said mosques are places for worship, and should not be turned into makeshift markets.

They complained that the sellers, who appeared in large numbers during the Eid gatherings, were seen busy advertising various products while the sermon was ongoing.

According to them, the practice disrupts sermons and distracts worshippers.

One of the worshipers, Ishaq Abdullahi, described the development as disturbing, and called for urgent intervention by authorities to curb the ugly practice.

He lamented that worshippers who came to listen to religious teachings were instead forced to contend with noise and distractions.

“It is unacceptable. People came here to listen to sermons, but others are creating distractions. If not for the loudspeaker, many people would not have heard the message being delivered,” he said.

Another worshiper, Mubarak Rabiu, noted that the practice had become common in worship centres, alleging that the sellers often use religious gatherings as platforms to promote their products.

“In Juma’at mosques, immediately after the imam finishes prayer, they stand up and start advertising their products. Whenever someone complains, they accuse the person of trying to stop their business or source of livelihood,” he said.

They urged the government and relevant religious authorities to take measures to preserve the sanctity of prayer grounds and ensure worshippers can observe religious activities without interruption.
