A Kano-based Islamic cleric, Ibrahim Isah-Makwarari, has urged Muslims to go beyond the Maulud celebration and apply the Prophet Muhammad’s teachings in their daily lives.

The cleric urged them to specifically promote the prophet’s virtues: tolerance, humility, peace, love, sacrifice, and mutual respect for humanity.

Mr Isah-Makwarari made the call in Kano on the sidelines of Maulud activities, known as ‘Takutaha’ in Kano on Tuesday.

Takutaha is observed on the 19th of Rabi’u al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar, as part of Maulud activities.

It is marked with preaching, visitations, recitation of the Qur’an, prayers, and ‘Zikr’—the remembrance of God—in honour of the prophet.

Mr Isah-Makwarari said people in Kano usually go around the city during the occasion reciting prayers and praising the prophet.

He said the occasion gave Muslims an opportunity to reflect on the prophet’s life and teachings.

He said the fundamental purpose of the Maulud celebration was to express gratitude to Almighty Allah for sending the prophet to guide humanity on what He loves and what He has prohibited.
