Ousted Myanmar civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been moved from prison to a government building, an official from her National League for Democracy (NLD) party has told reporters.

The politician has been held by the military regime in the country after her government was ousted in 2021.

“Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been moved to a high-level venue compound on Monday night,” an official from NLD told AFP on Friday on condition of anonymity.

Since his detention, Ms Suu Kyi, sentenced to 33 years in jail for a series of trump-up charges, has only been seen publicly once – this was in photos captured by state media in a bare courtroom in the military-built capital Naypyidaw in February 2021.

The 78-year-old was found guilty by the military junta of court of corruption, possessing illegal walkie-talkies, and flouting coronavirus restrictions. There have been concerns about the health of the Nobel laureate.

Over one million people have been displaced in Myanmar since the 2021 coup, which has degenerated into an all-out civil war between the military junta and combined local and indigenous paramilitary forces fighting to regain control of the country.

More than 33,988 people have been killed since the civil war began, with 2,039 of those casualties being civilians, while over 11,000 people have been arrested and 12,000 civilian properties destroyed.
