The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has donated assorted relief materials to victims of the June 13 attack in Yelwata, Benue State.

Presenting the items on Wednesday in Makurdi, the Acting Managing Director of the commission, Jimoh Gabi, conveyed the agency’s heartfelt condolences to the state government and families of the victims.

He assured them that the commission was committed to supporting all affected communities under its jurisdiction.

Mr Gabi noted that N-HYPPADEC was currently engaged in clearing blocked channels and drainages as part of ongoing efforts to mitigate flooding in its coverage areas.

He explained that the delay in responding to the Yelwata victims was due to logistical challenges and not neglect.

“We have absolute confidence in the state government to ensure these materials are distributed judiciously to the affected victims,” Mr Gabi said.

He stressed the need for enhanced environmental awareness and intelligence gathering to better equip security forces in preventing future attacks.

Items donated include 195 mattresses, 195 bags of 50 kg rice, 65 cartons of seasoning (Maggi), and 130 cartons of 3-in-1 Milo.

Other items were 65 cartons of soap, 65 cartons of treated mosquito nets, 65 cartons of detergents, 156 rubber mats, and 10 Hero motorcycles.

Receiving the materials, Governor Hyacinth Alia commended N-HYPPADEC for its consistent support and described the commission as a reliable development partner.

He recalled several previous interventions, including the construction of the Idye drainage channel in Makurdi to control flooding.

Mr Alia acknowledged that the Yelwata attack resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, with lives lost, homes destroyed, and hundreds displaced.

He lauded the agency’s efforts under its current leadership and pledged that all victims would receive the necessary assistance.

The governor stated, “We will work closely with you as a state to move beyond reactionary responses to disasters.
“Through joint planning and forecasting, we can better protect our communities and reduce the risk of future attacks.’’
