The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), on Saturday, honoured its immediate past Chief of the Air Staff, retired Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, with a colourful and emotion-laden flying-out parade at the NAF 053 Base, Abuja.
The ceremony, steeped in military tradition and aerial spectacle, marked Mr Abubakar’s final official engagement in uniform after over three decades of service and nearly two and a half years at the helm of the Air Force.
In his valedictory address, Mr Abubakar described the parade as one of the highest honours accorded to him in the course of his career, saying it offered a solemn moment of reflection and gratitude to God and to officers, airmen and airwomen whose professionalism sustained the Service.
He expressed confidence in the leadership of his successor, Air Marshal Kelvin Naneke, noting that while individuals change, the institution remains steadfast in its constitutional responsibility to defend Nigeria’s unity, security and sovereignty.
Reflecting on his tenure, Mr Abubakar highlighted improvements in aircraft serviceability, enhanced operational readiness across multiple theatres, revitalised training institutions and the induction of new platforms to strengthen air power projection.
He disclosed that 589 infrastructure projects were executed under his stewardship, alongside renewed emphasis on aviation safety as the bedrock of operational effectiveness.
The retired air chief also cited the establishment of the Nigerian Air Force Microfinance Bank to improve personnel welfare, stressing that the achievements recorded were products of teamwork, sacrifice and institutional dedication.
Paying tribute to fallen heroes, Mr Abubakar urged personnel to recommit to the core values of professionalism, integrity, courage and service before self, noting that the ultimate purpose of their sacrifices remained the peace and security of all Nigerians.
The parade featured precision drills, ceremonial fly-past and full military honours, reflecting the high standards and discipline that define the NAF.
Senior military officers, representatives of sister services, government officials, family members, course mates and well-wishers attended the event, applauding Mr Abubakar’s contributions to the growth and transformation of the Air Force.
As he formally bowed out, Mr Abubakar reaffirmed his loyalty to the Service and unwavering commitment to the unity and security of Nigeria, declaring that he was leaving with deep gratitude and absolute confidence in the future of the nation.
