The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone D, has called for a performance review of the federal ministry of power over the persistent electricity crises affecting tertiary institutions.

The zone’s coordinator, Kayode Adeyemo, made the call in a statement issued in Ibadan on Monday.

He said the prolonged blackout across the region’s campuses had negatively impacted academic activities, especially during examination periods.

Mr Adeyemo said the students had endured months of erratic power supply, making it difficult for them to study, conduct research, and complete academic assignments.

According to him, hostels, libraries, and study centres in many institutions often remain in darkness for extended periods.

“Electricity is essential for effective learning, research and overall academic productivity,” he said.

Mr Adeyemo noted that the situation had also heightened security concerns within campuses and surrounding student communities.

He explained that poor lighting around hostels and study areas could expose students to theft, robbery, and other criminal activities.

He noted that many students were initially hopeful when Adebayo Adelabu was appointed minister of power by President Bola Tinubu.

However, he expressed disappointment that the power sector had not recorded the expected level of improvement under Mr Adelabu’s leadership.

According to him, the electricity challenges across institutions suggest the need for urgent reforms in the sector.

He, therefore, called on the federal government to take decisive action to restore a stable electricity supply, particularly in areas hosting tertiary institutions.

“Nigerian students deserve an enabling environment that supports learning and guarantees safety on campuses,” he said.
