NANS demands justice for slain Ogun student, calls for protest

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun Joint Campus Council, has condemned the killing of a student of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori-Ewekoro, who was reportedly killed during an alleged armed robbery attack in Eruku.
In a statement on Tuesday, Adimado Ahmed, spokesperson for the Ogun JCC, said the incident was not merely the loss of a student but of a young person, a future, a dream and a family’s hope.
“Behind every student sitting in a classroom is a parent, guardian, sibling, friend and an entire community hoping that the young person will successfully acquire education and build a meaningful future,” the group said.
He said a student’s life should never be cut short while pursuing education.
“Students leave their homes every day with the simple objective of attending lectures, writing examinations, conducting research, learning a trade or skill, and preparing themselves to contribute meaningfully to society,” it added.
The group expressed concern over insecurity around educational institutions and student communities in Ogun State and demanded urgent and decisive intervention.
It also called on students, student leaders, civil society organisations, parents, stakeholders and concerned citizens to join a peaceful mass protest to demand urgent action against insecurity and the protection of students across Ogun State.
“We specifically call on the Ogun State police command, the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Eleweran, the State Security Service (SSS), and other relevant security agencies to rise to this occasion.
“We demand a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident, the identification and prosecution of anyone found responsible, and stronger intelligence-led security operations around campuses and student communities,” the group said.
The students’ union demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and justice for the victim.
