The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has begun consideration on a bill to boost electricity generation and distribution in the state.

This is with a view to addressing the poor electricity supply in the state and its attendant negative impact on businesses and the last livelihood of the people.

Speaker of the Assembly, Danladi Jatau, said the legislature would do its best to ensure that the state government got the needed legislative backing to generate, transmit and distribute sufficient power supply to the people of the state.

He stated this while receiving the report of the House Standing Committee on Works and Transport on the electricity bill during plenary on Tuesday in Lafia.

The bill is titled, “A Bill for a Law to Repeal and Re-enact the Nasarawa State Electricity Power Agency Law, 2018 and Provide for Electricity Generation, Transmission, System Operation, Distribution and Supply in the State and for Other Matters Connected Therewith.”

Mr Jatau said that the bill, when passed, would address the lingering issue of poor electricity supply in the state.

He said, “This will create jobs, boost socioeconomic activities and increase the revenue base of the state.’’

The speaker slated October 23 for the deliberation of the committee’s report.

Earlier, the committee’s chairman, Suleiman Azara, while presenting the report, urged his colleagues to support its recommendations for improved power supply in the state.

Mr Azara said that empowering the state government to generate its own electricity would be the best way to address the prolonged poor power supply in the state.
