Nasarawa United Football Club management says its target is to return to the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) after the club’s relegation to the Nigerian National League (NNL).

Othman Ahmed, the club’s chairman, stated this at a news conference in Lafia on Monday.

Nasarawa United was relegated to the second tier of the country`s football league after relegation from the abridged NPFL 2022/223 season.

The club, however, commenced its 2023/2024 NNL season campaign with a 1-0 win over Zamfara United at the Lafia Township Stadium on Saturday.

Ahmed lauded the state governor, Abdullahi Sule, for his support and thanked the club’s supporters for their massive support despite its current predicament.

He assured them that the club had set a target of an immediate return to the NPFL at the end of the 2023/2024 NNL season, and the target will be met.

“I want to assure them that we will not disappoint them in the NNL. We started well on Saturday.

“We broke a jinx because in the last six previous opening matches, Nasarawa United hardly won, but this season, we won our opening match.

“Our target in this league this season is to get back to the Premier League. We are battle-ready to achieve that target and we will not disappoint,” he said.

Also, Nasarawa United’s head coach, Usman Adams, assured the state government and supporters that the team will do all it takes to return the club to the apex league.

“Even our performance against Zamfara United on Saturday wasn’t our best. Something went wrong. Jittery and anxiety came in. We will adjust quickly to achieve our goal at the end of the season.

“With the huge support we are enjoying from the state government, the new pitch, equipment and so on, I want to assure you that the boys are highly motivated.

“ I also want you to believe that we are in the premier league already,” he said.
