Nasarawa varsity seeks assembly intervention to end ASUU strike
The Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), has appealed to the Nasarawa State House of Assembly to intervene in the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The vice-chancellor of the university, Prof. Sa’adatu Liman, made the appeal when the institution’s management appeared before the House Committee on Education to present its second-quarter 2026 budget performance on Tuesday in Lafia.
Ms Liman said ending the strike would go a long way toward improving the standard of education at the university and in the state at large.
She commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for his efforts toward resolving the industrial dispute.
“His Excellency, Gov. Abdullahi Sule, has made efforts and is still making efforts to end the ongoing ASUU strike in the institution.
“He has approved the payment of two months’ Consolidated Academic Staff Allowance (CATA) and Professorial Allowance.
“It is in view of this that I want to appeal to the committee to wade into the ASUU strike to end the strike so that our students will return to school,” she said.
The vice-chancellor also thanked the committee for its support for the institution’s success.
Earlier, Abel Bala, the committee chairman, said the exercise aimed to assess the institution’s budget performance for the second quarter of 2026.
Mr Bala commended the vice-chancellor for the university’s performance in revenue generation.
He also commended the state government for its efforts to resolve the strike and appealed to the striking lecturers to return to the classroom.
“I want to appreciate the state government for making efforts to end the ongoing ASUU strike.
“I also want to appeal to ASUU to sheathe its sword in the interest of the students,” he said.
Mr Bala assured the university of the committee’s continued support to enable it to achieve its objectives.
ASUU embarked on the strike over issues relating to the payment of CATA and professorial allowance.
Meanwhile, the management of the College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Lafia, also appeared before the committee to present its second-quarter 2026 budget performance.
Mr Bala commended the institution for its performance in revenue generation and other areas.
He also appreciated Mr Sule for prioritising the institution’s activities.
Dr Vincent Aya, deputy rector of the college, thanked the committee for its support and called for its continued support.
He also commended the governor for giving the institution maximum attention.
