National Theatre workers threaten protest over use of ‘under tree’ as office

A few weeks after a protest rally, workers of the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos State, still carry out their official duties under trees.
The workers, under the aegis of the Joint Union Congress, had, on March 20, held a rally to protest alleged poor working conditions, including reporting for work under trees at the National Theatre Complex, Iganmu.
The congress comprises the Amalgamated Union of Public, Civil, Technical, Recreational Employees, and Radio, Television and Theatre Arts Workers Union.
The workers had called on the federal government to return them to their offices following the completion of the renovation of the edifice.
The Lagos State secretary of AUPCTRE -federal organ, Omotola Babatunde, told journalists on Tuesday in Lagos that all attempts by the workers to reach an agreement with the National Theatre management proved abortive.
Mr Babatunde said, “We are waiting for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to give the management a 14-day ultimatum.
“NLC meeting is still ongoing. We are waiting, expecting feedback.”
