NDLEA destroys 50 hectares of marijuana farms in Edo
The Edo Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it destroyed 50 hectares of marijuana farms and 17 tons of the substance seized in 2023.
Its state commander of the agency, Buba Wakawa, disclosed this on Tuesday in Benin while briefing reporters on the command’s achievements in 2023.
Mr Wakawa said the hectares comprised 46 farms located in different parts of the state.
The NDLEA commander said the suspects chose to engage in the cultivation of the illicit substance rather than farming of food crops that would be useful to the populace.
The commander said the agency also seized 17.955 tons of marijuana and other psychotropic substances within the period.
“The highest drug seizure is marijuana, which is 17.487 tons, while the others such as cocaine, heroin, codeine syrup, among other psychotropic drugs, constituted the other value.’’
He called on the public to give the agency useful information to help reduce drugs to the barest minimum in the state.
