The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has donated relief materials worth millions of naira to victims of recent flood disasters in Akaeze and Ishiagu communities of Ivo Local Government Area, Ebonyi.

The materials included bags of rice, beans and garri, cartons of vegetable oil, mattresses, mosquito nets and women’s clothing.

Receiving the materials, Governor Francis Nwifuru commended NEMA for its prompt intervention, describing the recurring flood disasters in parts of the state as devastating.

Mr Nwifuru said many victims had lost their means of livelihood to the disaster, assuring NEMA officials that the state government would ensure transparent distribution of the materials to genuine victims.

“I am grateful to NEMA for this show of concern and this support is something we will never take for granted,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the Federal and state governments would soon address the recurring flooding, noting that measures had been recommended and resources mapped out to tackle the menace.

Earlier, Imam Gariki, director of Relief and Rehabilitation, NEMA, said the agency’s Enugu Operations Office had conducted an assessment to determine the extent of the damage and the assistance required from the federal government.

Mr Gariki appealed to the state government to ensure prompt distribution of the relief materials directly to the affected victims.
