New coup d’état in Burkina Faso thwarted, military junta claims

Burkina Faso’s military junta said a coup plot was thwarted on Tuesday.
The junta alleged a conspiracy by officers and others to destabilise the nation and plunge it into turmoil.
The claim of a coup plot came less than a year after the seizure of power by the military head of state Ibrahim Traoré.
It marked the second coup attempt in Burkina Faso since 2022 amidst the ongoing struggle with Islamist insurgency.
In a televised statement, government officials confirmed some arrests over the coup plot but did not provide specific details about those involved in the attempt to overthrow the junta.
Recent murmurs of discontent within the armed forces had circulated. On Tuesday, rumours of an impending mutiny prompted hundreds of people to rally to support the military junta in Ouagadougou.
In a related development, the Burkina Faso junta suspended the French-language news magazine Jeune Afrique, accusing it of publishing articles that discredited the military government.
