Newcastle confirm Howe resignation as head coach

Newcastle United have confirmed that Eddie Howe has resigned as the club’s head coach, bringing an end to his tenure of more than four years with the club.
The Premier League side announced the manager’s decision on Friday, two days after a 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City on Wednesday.
The club also confirmed departures of Howe’s coaching staff, Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches, Simon Weatherstone, and Dan Hodges.
In a statement, the manager said he decided to step down “after a period of personal reflection,” describing the move as being in the best interests of himself and the club.
He said: “After nearly five years of giving my life, heart and soul into the club with unrelenting energy, I feel that it is in the best interests of both myself and the club to step away, recharge and take a break.
“Although it’s been incredibly difficult to make this decision, I know in my heart that it’s the right one. I have always put the best interests of Newcastle before my own in every single decision I have made whilst I’ve been here and this one is no different.
“It has been the privilege of my lifetime to have been the manager of Newcastle United.”
He also thanked the club’s owners for their trust, along with his coaching staff and players for their support and dedication. Howe also appreciated the fans’ “passion and loyalty,” which inspired him every day at the club.
David Hopkinson, Newcastle’s chief executive, thanked the manager for his contribution to the club, saying, “While we are naturally disappointed to see Eddie leave, we remain immensely thankful for everything he has done for the club”.
Eddie Howe was appointed Newcastle manager in November 2021 after leaving Bournemouth. He transformed the club from a bottom-table side battling relegation into European contenders.
He led the Magpies to their first major domestic trophy in 70 years, winning the Carabao Cup in 2025.
German manager Matthias Jaissle has emerged as the top candidate to take over from Howe, with the club closing in on his appointment.
