Niger deputy governor urges commitment to democratic culture

The deputy governor of Niger State, Yakubu Garba, has urged Nigerians to continue to embrace democratic values and culture as the country marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
Mr Garba made the call in a Democracy Day message issued by his press secretary, Ummikhaltume Abdullahi-Kuta, in Minna on Friday.
He described democracy as the most inclusive system of government, noting that it provides citizens with opportunities to participate in decision-making, hold leaders accountable and contribute to national development.
The deputy governor said Nigeria’s democratic journey had recorded significant milestones since the return to civilian rule in 1999, despite the challenges encountered over the years.
According to him, progress made in strengthening democratic institutions, promoting the rule of law and expanding civic participation should encourage citizens to remain committed to democratic ideals.
Mr Garba urged residents to uphold the principles of tolerance, peaceful coexistence, respect for divergent opinions and active participation in governance.
He pointed out that democracy thrives when citizens engage constructively with government and one another.
The deputy governor commended Nigerians for their resilience and patriotism in sustaining democratic governance over the years.
He called on political leaders, stakeholders and citizens to place collective interest above personal and sectional considerations to sustain peace, unity and development.
Mr Garba reaffirmed Governor Umaru Bago’s commitment to good governance, transparency, accountability, and people-oriented policies aimed at improving the welfare of the people and advancing the New Niger Agenda.
He congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day and expressed optimism that the country would continue to consolidate its democratic gains.
He maintained that such efforts would help build a more prosperous, united and inclusive society for present and future generations.
