The Niger police command says it has rescued six children from a human trafficking syndicate in Niger.

The command’s spokesman, SP Wasiu Abiodun, disclosed this in a statement issued in Minna and made available to journalists on Wednesday.

At about 5 p.m. on November 5, one Victoria Chukwumezie, 40, of Nyanya, Abuja was arrested at Diko Junction with three children between two years and three years.

The children were allegedly abducted from Lambata area of Niger.

According to Mr Abiodun, preliminary investigation reveals that the suspect had committed similar acts in Tafa, Suleja, and Madalla areas.

He stated that in a follow-up investigation, the suspect led police operatives of SCID Minna to Kurudu area of Abuja on November 11, where two additional suspects were arrested.

The suspects included a couple, Leonard Ugochukwu, 55, and Ngozi Ugochukwu, 45, residing in Kurudu, Abuja.

Mr Abiodun added that the suspects were both arrested, with two allegedly abducted children, namely Goodnews Sunday, 4, and Ummikari Bello, 3, in their residence at Orozo area of Kurudu, Abuja.

During interrogation, they claimed that they got the children through the intervention of one Okpalaye Ibrahim, who was working in a hospital in the area.

The suspects confessed that Ibrahim sold the two children to them at N1.1 million each, in addition to a registration fee of N100,000, totalling N2.3 million.

Meanwhile, the suspects had been in custody, while investigation was still ongoing to catch other suspects connected to the case.
