Nigeria’s Flamingos advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2027 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup following a 2-1 win over Mexico at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Morocco on Thursday.

Oluebube Umejiaku put Nigeria ahead in the 40th minute when she capitalised on a poor clearance from the Mexicans before driving the ball into the box and firing past the keeper.

Nigeria did not double the advantage until the 71st minute when Mary Dunstan powered home a half volley inside the 18-yard box to make it 2-0.

However, the Mexicans launched a late attempt to come back into the match but managed only to pull one back in the 12 minutes added by the referee, as Nigeria secured the victory to book their place in the last eight.

Nigeria will face Venezuela on November 1 for a place in the World Cup semi-finals.
