Nigeria reaffirms commitment to ECOWAS standby force
Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment and support to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Standby Force to enhance regional peace and security.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, stated this on Tuesday while welcoming the Chief of Staff of the ECOWAS Standby Force, Brigadier General Sulaiman Massaquoi, to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Nigeria also promised to donate an 18-seater bus to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Standby Force to support its administrative, logistical and operational activities.
A statement on Tuesday said Mr Massaquoi was accompanied by officers from the ECOWAS Standby Force Core Task Force Headquarters and the Peace Support Operations Division of the ECOWAS Commission.
During the meeting, Mr Massaquoi thanked the CDS for receiving the delegation and expressed ECOWAS’ appreciation for Nigeria’s continued leadership, commitment and support for regional peace and security.
He also sought the continued support of the Nigerian Armed Forces, particularly in advancing rapid support for the ECOWAS Standby Force and the establishment and operationalisation of the ECOWAS Counter-Terrorism Brigade.
Mr Oluyede reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces to supporting the ECOWAS Standby Force and other regional peace and security initiatives.
The statement said the visit was to strengthen cooperation between the Nigerian force and ECOWAS standby force in support of regional peace and security objectives.
