Nigeria recommits to peace, democratic stability in West Africa

The Nigerian ambassador-designate to Benin Republic, Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim, reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to promoting peace and democratic stability within West Africa.
Ms Adeola-Ibrahim said this during her Eid-el-Kabir visit to the 260 Nigerian troops of Operation Atileyin Alaafia II, stationed at Togin Military Base in Cotonou, Republic of Benin.
She told the troops that Mr Tinubu, and all Nigerians, remain immensely proud of their unwavering commitment, professionalism and unfaltering loyalty to duty.
“Your presence here in the Republic of Benin is not just a military deployment; it is a reflection of Nigeria’s longstanding commitment to regional peace, stability and brotherhood.
“As representatives of our great nation, you have conducted yourselves with dignity, discipline and exceptional professionalism since your deployment on April 10, 2026.
“Through your conduct, you continue to reinforce Nigeria’s image as a responsible regional power and dependable partner in the promotion of peace and democratic stability within West Africa,” Ms Adeola-Ibrahim stated.
She commended the troops for their courage, discipline and sacrifice which have continued to bring pride not only to Nigeria but to the African continent.
“Four days ago, the people of the Republic of Benin witnessed another peaceful democratic transition as President Romuald Wadagni took his oath of office. That moment did not happen in isolation.
“Your vigilance, sacrifice and readiness contributed significantly to maintaining the atmosphere of security and stability necessary for that process to succeed peacefully. Your efforts have not only strengthened security cooperation between Nigeria and one of its most strategic and fraternal neighbours, but have also deepened the historic bonds between our two countries,” Ms Adeola-Ibrahim expalined.
According to her, the Nigerian government does not take the sacrifices of the armed forces for granted.
“We understand what it means to be away from your loved ones during moments of celebration and togetherness. At a time when many Nigerians are spending the sallah season with their families, sharing meals, laughter and prayers.
“You have remained here in service to your country and to the cause of regional stability. That level of sacrifice speaks volumes about your patriotism and sense of duty.
“History is always kind to men and women who place service above comfort, and posterity will remember your contribution,” Ms Adeola-Ibrahim said.
She noted that the strength of any nation was not measured solely by the size of its economy or the eloquence of its leaders.
“But also by the courage of the men and women willing to stand in defence of peace, order and national honour. You represent the very best of Nigeria—resilient, courageous, disciplined and selfless.
“In the spirit of sallah and as a token of the Mission’s appreciation, the embassy has made a modest donation to put smiles on your faces during this festive period. What we present today can truly equal the depth of our gratitude or the value we place on your service, kindly accept it as a sincere expression of appreciation from a grateful nation and Mission family.”
Ms Adeola-Ibrahim, therefore, implored the troops to remain steadfast, vigilant, united and continue to uphold the highest standards of professionalism.
Responding, the commanding officer of the troops, Ambrose Ikoro, thanked Mr Adeola-Ibrahim for appreciating the efforts of the Nigerian armed forces. He assured of the military’s unwavering commitment to regional peace and security.
