Nigeria suffers another power grid collapse
Millions of homes and businesses across the country were affected by a nationwide blackout on Thursday after the national power grid collapsed.
The grid, which is managed from Osogbo, Osun State, was said to have collapsed at about 4:30 p.m., making it the fourth time the grid will collapse in 2024.
The Eko Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the power outage on its official X handle, saying, “Kindly be informed that there was a system collapse at 16:28hrs which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network.
“We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as power supply is restored,” it added.
Leadership quoted reports revealing that the grid output was at 2,984 megawatts as of 4 p.m. before it plummeted to zero in under an hour, resulting in the seizure of operations of all 21 plants connected to the grid as of 5 p.m.
