Nigeria has been ranked the lowest country in the world on the ‘Quality of Life Index’, according to a recent report by Numbeo.

In the report titled ‘Quality of Life Index by Country 2025 Mid-Year,’ Numbeo conducted a survey using overall human well-being factors, including safety, healthcare, cost of living, climate, security, and other relevant conditions.

Out of the 89 nations ranked by Numbeo, Nigeria ranked lowest with an index score of 15.6, which is 58.1 points adrift of 88th-placed Venezuela, despite political instability and a series of severe economic sanctions imposed by the United States on the South American economy.

Despite the recent deadly political revolution that led to the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last year, Bangladesh also ranked higher than Nigeria, with 77 points, as did Sri Lanka, with 82.8, and Egypt, with 83.2, completing the top five countries with the poorest living conditions.

Nigeria’s low ranking came amid aggressive economic policies that President Bola Tinubu has implemented since he assumed office, which he promised would improve Nigerians’ living conditions, but commentators argued they have made things worse for the population.

Under Mr Tinubu, Nigeria has also recorded a significant increase in insecurity across the country, which spiked in recent weeks following the high-profile televised attack on a church in Kwara state as well as the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi and Niger states just nine days apart last month.

Meanwhile, Luxembourg has the highest standard of living globally with 218.2 points, the Netherlands ranked second on 216.5 points, while Denmark is just 1.4 points behind the Dutch in third position.

Oman (215.1, Switzerland (210.9), Finland (208.3), Norway (199.2), Iceland (198), Austria (197.7) and Germany (195.2) completed the top 10.
