Nigeria’s Ese Brume has smashed compatriot Chioma Ajunwa’s 25-year old African long jump record to win the event at the Chula Vista Festival in California, USA.

The Delta state born sensation achieved the laudable feat on Saturday after making a leap of 7.17m to shatter the 7.12m record previously held by Ajunwa since the Atlanta Olympic games in 1996.

The twenty-five year old’s record at the event on the day was made at the sixth attempt after thrice making a distance of 6.83m, a distance of 6.75m and a distance of 6.88m.

Placing second and third to claim silver and bronze respectively were Brittney Reese of USA and Chantel Malone of the British Virgin Islands who made a leap of 7.10m and 7.07m respectively.

The new milestone made by the three time African senior champion in long jump now means she currently holds the event’s farthest leap in the world this year and has now broken her personal best record of 7.05m which she had attained in August 2019 at the Turkish Championships in Bursa, Turkey.

Brume is expected to compete for Nigeria at the Tokyo Olympics slated for July and is widely seen as a potential medal hopeful for the country at the upcoming sporting fiesta.
