A Nigerian national serving as a correctional officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Ayodele Abiodun Afosi, has been arrested after allegedly fleeing the scene of an accident.

The Peoples Gazette gathered that Mr Afosi was arrested by law enforcement officers on Monday after allegedly causing more than $200 in damages during the incident but failed to stop and provide information.

Reports stated that the suspect was, subsequently, booked into the Walker County Jail in Texas, where he was being held with a $3,000 bond. 

Mr Afosi’s arrest came just three months after being hired by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as a correctional officer, putting his employment with the state in jeopardy. 

Under Texas laws, drivers are required to stop at the scene of an accident as safely as possible and must provide necessary information, including name, address, vehicle registration number, insurance information and driver’s licence. 

Penalties for violators of the law may include six months’ imprisonment, up to $2,000 monetary fine or both in some occasions. They can also have their driver’s licence suspended and subjected to higher insurance premiums. 

Mr Afosi’s case has sparked reactions among netizens, with many faulting the hiring process of TDCJ, while others claimed he is an immigrant who had yet to assimilate into American culture. 

“Yet another Nigerian that will never assimilate or learn how to do anything. Why are these untrainable individuals being hired? And likely fired as fast as they hired because the rules don’t apply to them,” Facebook user Sue Sapien stated.

Another user, Residing Activest, held the same opinion, stating “This is a culture that cannot assimilate. Why are we hiring them?”

“The problem is that most of these people that

TDCJ hires start acting like they are above the Law when they are not above anything or anyone,” Jeremy Hunter said. 

Also, Cindy Seale commented, “He didn’t even make it through the probationary period on the job and he got arrested. Maybe this isn’t the job for you sir.”

The event mirrors one of the unsavoury stories linked to some Nigerian migrants overseas while others are making the country proud abroad in diverse sectors of the global economy.

Recall that The Gazette on Monday reported that the U.S. Secret Service seized about $700,000 in cryptocurrency stolen via business email compromise schemes involving accounts linked to Nigeria and was seeking its forfeiture at a federal court in Texas.
