Medical doctors from Nigeria and other countries under travel ban can now stay and practise in the U.S. due to modifications of President Donald Trump’s sweeping travel ban.

The New York Times reported on Sunday that the Trump administration had modified the travel ban on some countries to exempt their medical professionals.

“Applications associated with medical physicians will continue processing,” the Times reported, citing a statement by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

This followed the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services stating that physicians are now exempted from the travel ban on their countries.

The exemption of medical doctors from the travel ban now allows Nigerian medical doctors and other foreign nationals to obtain a work permit and remain in the U.S.

It came after Trump imposed a sweeping travel ban on 19 countries in June 2025 in fulfilment of his campaign promise to crack down on immigration.
