Nigerian households paid about N3,000 per litre to buy kerosene in May: NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says the average retail price of a litre of kerosene decreased from N2,976.94 recorded in April 2026 to N2,971.94 in May 2026.

The bureau said this in its May 2026 Kerosene Price Watch.

It said the May price of N2,971.94 represented a 0.17 per cent decrease compared to April’s N2,976.94.

The report said the average price per litre of kerosene increased by 36.62 per cent year-on-year, from N2,175.29 recorded in May 2025.

In the state profile analysis, the report showed that Sokoto recorded the highest average price of N3,984.09, followed by Jigawa at N3,824.68 and Taraba at N3,595.64.

On the other hand, the lowest price was recorded in Bayelsa at N2,018.79, followed by Kogi at N2,348.81 and Ekiti at N2,511.31.

The NBS said the analysis further showed that the North-West recorded the highest average retail price per litre of Kerosene at N3,343.12, followed by the North-East at N3,004.30.

It said the South-South recorded the lowest average retail price per litre of kerosene at N2,777.76.

The report said the average retail price per gallon of kerosene paid by consumers in May 2026 was N11,949.39, indicating a 10.80 per cent decrease from the N13,396.23 in April 2026.

On a year-on-year basis, the average price per gallon of kerosene increased by 40.88 per cent from N8,482.22 recorded in May 2025.

The state profile analysis showed that Sokoto recorded the highest average retail price at N15,928.39, followed by Kebbi at N15,855.73 and Niger at N14,465.43.

On the other hand, the report said Bayelsa recorded the lowest price at N7,084.56, followed by Ekiti and Kwara at N9,300.92 and N9,419.85, respectively.

Analysis by zone showed that the North-West recorded the highest average price per gallon of Kerosene at N13,444.05, followed by the North-East at N12,519.36.

The South-East recorded the lowest average price per gallon of kerosene at N11,032.42.
