Nigerian man arrested for multimillion-naira visa fraud, risks years in jail

A 53-year-old man, Babalola Waheed, on Friday appeared before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun for allegedly defrauding two visa seekers of N3 million.
The defendant, of no fixed address, was charged with fraud.
The prosecutor, E.O. Adaraloye, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 2 in the Ijoko area of Ota.
Mr Adaraloye alleged that the defendant defrauded two visa seekers—Olayiwola Mumeen and Oluwafemi Adetona—by obtaining N3 million on the pretext of procuring German visas for them.
He added that the defendant converted the money to his personal use.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The magistrate, O.O. Fadairo, granted the defendant bail of N1 million with one responsible surety in the same sum.
She ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to the Ogun government.
The case was adjourned until September 8 for trial.
