The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) in the United Kingdom has arrested and commenced the prosecution of a Nigerian, Maxwell Oguanaya, over his involvement in the murder of a fellow Nigerian, Taiwo Ekerin.

The MPS, in a statement on Friday, said the victim, Mr Ekerin, died following an assault and altercation on Lewisham High Street in southeast London on Sunday, May 24.

The police said officers who responded to the distress call regarding the incident met the 41-year-old victim at the scene with a severe head injury.

The agency stated that the London Ambulance Service offered first aid and subsequently took the victim to a hospital, before he was pronounced dead on Saturday, May 30.

The MPS said it arrested Mr Oguanaya, 32, a resident of Eastfield Road, Enfield, on Thursday, June 4, and charged him with murder.

The Ealing Magistrates’ Court ordered that the suspect be remanded in custody and adjourned the case until Tuesday.

The police added that another suspect, a 34-year-old man, was also arrested on suspicion of murder on Friday.
