The Nigeria Police Force says it would contact the U.S. Embassy over a recent false kidnap claim by the American influencer Victoria Waldrip, popularly known as Woah Vicky.

“The U.S. embassy will be contacted about the action of this American lady,” a source at the Force Headquarters told Peoples Gazette on Monday.

Waldrip had, on X, shared a series of posts about being on a trip to Nigeria. A now-deleted tweet claimed she was kidnapped, adding a police report had been filed.

In a viral video, the influencer later noted that the kidnap was fake, noting she put up the stunt out of boredom. Many of her fans condemned her for raising a false alarm.

Ms Waldrip later apologised to her fans for the widespread rumours and assured foreigners of safety in Nigeria and Africa.

The police source, who sought anonymity to comment on a probe still at the preliminary stage, said the force had launched an investigation into the development, branding Waldrip’s joke as unfortunate.

“We heard about the matter, and we’re already investigating. It is unfortunate what she did because we take kidnapping and safety of foreigners very seriously in our country,” the source added.
