Nigerian students studying at the GD Goenka University in Gurgaon have fled the campus after they were attacked by their Indian counterparts.

The pandemonium broke out during a football game over dispute about replacing a player. Six persons have been confirmed hurt from the attacks which affected about 60 Nigerian students, police sources say.

Nigerian students who escaped the attacks have relocated to Delhi.

This clash came about a month after Indian students protested against foreign students performing Islamic prayers at the soccer field. The Indian students, predominantly Hindus, had complained to the institution’s management, insisting that Muslim students should limit their prayers to designated rooms. 

The school’s administration said that an amicable resolution had been reached and denied the on-campus violence. Eight students were however placed on academic probation while an internal investigation was launched.

Nigerian and Indian students accuse one another of harassment and have file complaints with the police.

Following the assistance of the Nigerian Embassy, a Nigerian student named Rabiu Mohammed filed a police report (FIR) accusing Indian students of attacking him and other international students.

In accordance with the complaints, the ASI, Sohna Police Station, has filed a case under sections 323 (causing harm) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC against both sets of students.
