Nigerian teams to face Libyan opponents in CAF Confederation Cup playoffs
Rivers United and Plateau United will lock horns with Libya’s El Nasr Benghazi and Al Akhdar at the playoff round of the CAF Confederation Cup.
The two are the remaining Nigerian clubs in the competition, having crashed out after failing to overcome their North African opponents in the second preliminary round of the league.
Rivers United has been drawn against Libyan side El Nasr Benghazi and Plateau United against Al Akhdar in the Confederation Cup playoff round.
The winners of the fixtures will proceed to the group stage of the CAF second tier competition.
Over the weekend, Nigerian champions Rivers United were walloped by defending champions Wydad Casablanca 6-0 in the second leg of the fixture.
The Moroccan side scaled through to the group on 7-2 aggregate scoreline as the first leg ended 2-1 in favour of Rivers United.
Plateau United on the other hand narrowly missed out of the group after a controversial late penalty gave Esperance 1-0 victory in the second leg in Tunisia.
The aggregate scoreline ended in 2-2 but Esperance qualified to the group thanks to the away goal rule – the first leg in Nigeria ended 2-1 in favour of Plateau United.
The playoff fixtures will be played between November 2 and 9, 2022.
