The National Identity Management Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering secure, multi-purpose identity cards (ID cards) and digital identity services for every Nigerian.

The Head of Corporate Communications at the Commission, Kayode Adegoke, stated this in Abuja.

He made the remarks to clarify misconceptions and provide detailed information on the card’s benefits, eligibility and security features.

He said the General Multipurpose e-ID Card (GMPC), the official national identity card issued by NIMC, was designed to serve multiple functions, such as accessing student loans, government subsidies and social welfare programmes.

He added that the card also enables individuals to verify their identity at banks, hospitals and other public institutions, making it a vital tool for accessing essential services.

Mr Adegoke explained that any Nigerian who had successfully registered and verified under the national identity system and had been issued a national identification number (NIN) could request the card.

He said, “The card is produced only when a verified request is made, reducing waste and strengthening security. The GMPC is funded through partnerships with banks and private service providers, ensuring the project’s sustainability and wise use of government funds.
Additionally, the card features advanced security measures, including UV marks and digital verification, to prevent fraud and ensure authenticity.’’

Mr Adegoke said the commission was committed to inclusivity, issuing Government-to-Person (G2P) cards at no cost for certain Nigerians who are part of targeted government support programmes.

He also warned against the use of fake cards, noting that only ID cards officially issued by NIMC or its authorised partners are legally valid.

‘’NIMC remains dedicated to making the national identity system simple, safe and inclusive, encouraging the public to stay informed through its official website and verified channels. The commission has addressed common misconceptions about the national identity card, highlighting its uses, benefits and the process of obtaining it,’’ Mr Adegoke said.

According to him, only ID cards officially issued by NIMC or authorised partners are legally valid, warning that producing or using fake cards is illegal under the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007 and punishable by prosecution.

He said, “NIMC continues to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to curb illegal printing and safeguard public trust in the system. The commission remains committed to providing secure, multi-use ID cards and digital identity services for all Nigerians, ensuring a simple, safe, and inclusive process.
